Lucy and I went to Sapporo city. We got a subway ticket for 500 yen each – that’s an all day one for saturday, a weekday one would cost 800 yen, and boarded the tram at Sumikawa subway station, which is close to the international school.
I was nervous but I think Lucy will be more confident taking the subway after this trip. We got off at Sapporo subway station because a lady in the tram told us that the shopping is better here. All the stores were underground, hundreds of them. After a while, I felt claustrophobic and had to surface. I had to ask someone in my broken Japanese, where the exit was- kind of like the casinos in Las Vegas – one can never find the exit!
Once we got to road level, we were asking ourselves – now what?!! I wanted to go to the Botanical Gardens but Lucy wanted to find a Hello kitty store. We decided to look for the gardens first but we had no idea which direction to go. The signs were all in Japanese. We did get there in the end.
The girls here are so well dressed and trendy. They seemed to like western boots and shorts, lots of knee highs with heels too and also lots of teeny lacy socks with heels. No one wears tee shirts. I felt so matronly and huge. The girls are so tiny and skinny.
Guess what Lucy bought? A pair of converse high tops to wear as indoor shoes at school.
